I live an almost perfect life surrounded by people I love. I have a bed, I have enough food to fill up my stomach and I have a home. My life is embellished with unforgettable moments, in brief I am happy. Many people are in the same situation as I am, but access to potable water and food is not a matter of course for all human beings.
There are millions of men, women and children around the world living in poverty. Millions of refugees and many more people in want of actual necessities such as clean water. According to Food and Agriculture Organization close to 15% of the world population, 923 million people were undernourished in 2007. Isn’t this strange considering we already produce enough food to feed all these mouths? The world is unfair and we better cope with this problem as soon as possible! It is our common mission.
I wish we could reform the world over one night. See that every person get a roof over their head, enough to eat and access to clean water in the near future. Unfortunately it seems a long way to go even in my dreams but it is possible! It is each man's duty to take their responsibility. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. Charity does not necessarily mean donating large sums of money, even a small sum is a great help. We can also help quite easy by choose ecological, local produced and fair trade products and food. And not at least we can reduce our consumption. None of this changes lives like mine dramatically but hopefully it improves someone else’s. We can help, without give up what we have. Let us cooperate.
This came to my mind when I watched Annie Leonard’s presentation, The Story of Stuff. It made my dream of world peace develop. Even thought her message is not a pioneer, she points out how easy we can be helpful in the struggle for a better and fairer society. I hope we will succeed!
Iam just moved by the way you have felt the plight of the people living in the under devloped countries...Your tag line is also very thought out and beautiful..."No one can do everything, but everyone can do something" ...If we have more people thinking like you we would definitely one day be living in your dream world in REALITY...cheers:)
SvaraRaderaIt’s a beautiful dream you have Emilia. I, too think that everyone should do what they can. If everyone made an effort do improve the environment I believe it would make a huge difference for the people in need.
SvaraRaderaHi Emilia!
SvaraRaderaA good and interesting text, dreams are important they are the goals we strive for and a good source of inspiration when times are though. But we can’t live on dreams alone, we need some kind of concrete solution when faced with a problem. The reforms you suggests, buy ecological and not over consume is a good start, but we need more. For examples laws to prevent for example exporting garbage to other countries not all people have the same dream and morals as you do. Those need to be educated and come to understand what consequences there actions will have. Something laws and a better understanding of the environmental can bring.
All and all a very good and inspiring text, it were easy to follow, fun and warming to read. I hope you will live to see your dream come true. =)
That's a beautiful dream indeed. However, I fear that it will be a lot of years until it becomes reality. As Annie Leonard says, it has become our culture and way of living to consume, rather than anything else, like donating for example. I love that you think of yourself as happy, but I'm still pretty sure you still buy a lot of stuff (for example, one doesn't really need more than one pair of jeans) from money that would be of much more use in underdeveloped countries. That's just how people of the west work.
SvaraRaderaAnyway, the dream is awesome. Please do everyone a favor by planting it in as many people as possible! (Inception-style, yeah!)
I have to agree with every other comment to this entry, it is a very beatiful thought! I wish there was an easy fix to the problem, but the main issue is probably that there isn't.. I don't think people don't act because they do not care, it is probably more due to the fact that they do not know how. We need to raise awareness of the little things every one can do, as you said, everyone can do something!
